The quiz you never took

A quiz app collected Facebook information from participants and their friends. The onward Cambridge Analytica pathway ran through researcher Aleksandr Kogan. Facebook restricted this kind of access in 2014, with a transition period for existing apps.

One person’s click could reach beyond that person. The people in the wider social circle had not all volunteered for the quiz. The crucial distinction is access versus permission: an app’s technical access did not mean Facebook authorised the onward transfer.

You didn’t take the quiz. Your profile still made the guest list.
